The Paradoxical State

When I decided to write about something today, I was grossly confused as to what it could be!!! There are so many things I can talk about, but where to start from was a big question. Anyways when I was thinking, I suddenly got reminded of an article about Happiness Index in India. Indians, it seems are the happiest people still existing on the planetJ. I was faced with another big question! What are we so happy about??!! 35% of people living below poverty line, only 65% literacy rate, per capita income which can’t be compared with developed economies, hardly any infrastructure or amenities for public, standard of living way below as compared to other countries…the list is endless…I thought for sometime and found the correct word to explain “Happiness”. Actually, as a nation we are a group of contented and indifferent people. However, we have an opinion for almost everything under the sky, and that includes me as well. For a moment forget about us as a nation. Think of yourself and see if you are really happy. Confess to yourself and not to anyone else, and I know the answer in most cases would be NO.

In my opinion (I told you we have an opinion for every damn thingJ) as a nation with the largest young population, we have all the right to be “HAPPY”. But when you probe deeper, you will find sadness and dejection at professional and personal front in most of us. And it is natural because our aspirations and dreams are too high to be understood and met at this juncture.

Let me leave you with one question – Do you think you are happy? If yes…why? And if no…why?

If you differ from what I have said, please put in your comment (and I’ll give another opinionJ) and if you don’t, still your views are solicited.

Hey I agree with you and know that I am not happy. If I take independant factors I can find happiness, but after giving it a broader look or deep thought I realised that I am compromising. I am not happy because in an attempt to grow professionaly I have lost total track of my personal life.

You are somewhat right and I am somewhat agree with your conclusion. (I am using “somewhat” many a times in spite of knowing that there is nothing called somewhat pregnant)………any ways.

Let’s throw some point over “Happiness” emotion, one of the most dubious, unexplained and undefined and sheer relative emotions, there are two ways of looking at the happiness or can say “Are we leading a happy lives?”

One is “Are we living happily and another is to have certain attitude towards one’s life, and to measure up to certain standards.
Aristotle has written a lot about happiness in his book – “Nicomachean Ethics”.
Loads of question arises like “is it that everything should be sought for sake of happiness?” or “Happiness needs a certain state of mind?”
There are still several questions in the universe. Isn’t it ?

Keep writing, and inflame emotions (",)

Happiness is a sense of inner peace or release of enormous positive energy or both simultaneously (watch sachin tendulkar take a wicket or hit a straight drive - you'll see last bit come through).

Most of us equate Happiness with attainment of a goal - mostly set for us by some one else - like Vaibhav said parent, teacher, friends, boss , wife/girlfriend....

How often do we realise that the most happy moments are those just before you get to the goal - like the feeling you have in the last few minutes just before you reach YOUR HOME - BACK HOME not in Bombay.Once you reach, withn moments the emptiness returns.

Learn to enjoy the path towards the goal - rather than worrying about the goal per se.

Life is like a train ride in Swiss Alps. You can bury yourself in a book or watch out of the window. Eitherways you will reach the destination. Happiness is what you saw while travelling - pages of the book or beauty of the Alps.

I think writing at 0045 hrs leads to rambling. Let me end here.

I don't expect agreement - feel free to write in your comments.

I completely agree with what Sir is saying. Look for happiness in small things. Look for what are the positive things that you have and stop cribbing and brooding over what you dont have. You guys are lucky to have such a nice family, good eductaion, a good job, great friends...why dont you look at all that Vaibhav and Prateek. I am sure you guys are not that unhappy as you claim......And I know what the unhappiness is about ;).....you will get what you want when the time comes....dont ruin your present and waste it by just waiting for it and brooding....enjoy each moment...life is too precious to be wasted....so live life king size

I ask you one question? Do u really want to be happy or you want to pretend that u are happy.

We all are very selfish.

It is the security of knowing that you are safe with the people that you love and are having the things the way you want it.

So wat u think dude.

As we always think / say if u have everything (money , home) then u say its time to have some " ME TIME " or " Live the life to its fullest " but when u don't have anything you need everything (money, home) .

It sounds good when u say
" STOP EXISTING & START LIVING "
but are we or u doing that ????????????

naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa////

I completely Agree wid Anjali and Sir, that Happiness lies in small details of life u just cant afford to overlok it...like

Happiness lies in the passions we pursue and in the pressures we decline. It is in knowing how to work and when to play. It is in the treasured objects we keep nearby and in the ordinary moments we elevate into small celebrations. It is in the note we write to a friend and the kindness we show a stranger. It is in the colors we love and the music that transports us. It may be as simple as sunlight on your face; as sudden as a shared smile; as sensuous as a single flower on your desk, candles on your nightstand, or cookies hot from the oven. Happiness is what you make it, where you make it. Happiness is our best choice.

I do ignore smtime at these parameters and my desire overshadows the sources of happiness ! may be!!!
or these simple things are that complex to comprehend...

Any comments ? folks

after going through the insights that u people have given...i have started to believe i ought to b happy:o)n I m...I do look for small moments to celebrate and njoy...but I think somewhere I stopped feeling jubilant about small things.may b coz I know, like everthng els any such instant is just momentary:0)and u'l encounter realities pretty soon...infact the other day I was telling one of my friends-"i dont remember when I felt jubilant like a bowler who just took 1 wicket out of 11". U may say m looking at the glass as half empty rather than as half full...but when m aiming at 11 wickets how do I celebrate just 1 single wicket??I may feel slightly RELAXED but not triumphant...may be therz some art that i still have to learn...let me njoy this Momentary pleasure for sometime and will surely come back with my feedback...keep writing...reading your comments is surely a pleasure and an eye opener..

The survey also mentioned that younger Indians are happier :)

So when it comes to countries all over the world, in India we have much more emphasis on family and friends and siblings that lasting marriages than anywhere else. More children come from wholesome families (joint or nuclear) in India than anywhere else. This is a BIG contributor.

Also, a look around me just makes me feel like everyone's discontented no matter what. NO matter how much your getting paid, no matter how cool your life, people always feel like its always falling short somewhere. I dont think this means we are unhappy, to the contrary this windspace between perfect contentment and what a person has makes him strive for more to bridge that gap.

I think for what its worth and for what trials and tribulations lie in store for me, im happy. I know i have the strenghth and will to face it and deal with it and i might as well not waste time being anythign other than happy.

Life's too short to be anything but.
